Carey, who stands nearly 5'10" tall, was once a leading American modeling model. Top designers including Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren loved her. Her father, an accomplished scientist, who was awarded the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists 1979 Scientist of the Year award is a renowned scientist. Carey has lived all over the world because of his work. Modeling began part time during her time studying at university at the University of Colorado and caught the attention of an agent for the Ford model Agency in New York. The model lived in France briefly, in Paris and Bordeaux. She then returned home to New York for her college studies and to further develop her career as a model. As she modeled, she continued to study full-time for a literature major at New York University. In New York she began to pursue acting. She had a small part on Club Paradise with Robin Williams, in 1986. She is a rock climber ski, windsurfing, and skiing.
